First: shut off the water
If water is flowing actively, close the main water shut-off before anything else. This is usually located at the front of the basement near where the water supply enters, or in the utility room.

These are general safety steps. Your specific situation may differ — when in doubt, call first.

Sewage or possible gas involvement — additional caution
Sewage backup
Sewage water is a health hazard. Do not attempt to clean up sewage backup without appropriate protective equipment. Contact us directly and indicate that sewage is involved so we can respond appropriately. Extensive contamination may require a restoration specialist in addition to plumbing repair.
Possible gas involvement
If you smell gas, do not use any electrical switches, phones, or open flames. Leave the building immediately, leaving the door open, and call Manitoba Hydro's gas emergency line at 1-888-624-9376 from outside or a neighbour's home. Do not call a plumber first — gas emergencies are handled by your gas utility.
